PETERSBURG, VA — The Bowie State women’s volleyball team earned its revenge as the Bulldogs defeated the Virginia State Trojans in five sets (25-20, 25-19, 13-25, 14-25, 15-13) Thursday on the road at Multipurpose Center to wrap up regular season and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. The win earns the Bulldogs a ticket to the CIAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2019.
The victory boosted the Bulldogs’ record to 6-25 overall and 4-13 in CIAA action. BSU improved to 4-6 in the Northern Division. Thursday’s win also snapped a 28-match losing skid for BSU against Virginia State.
The Bulldogs offense was paced by Nina Edwards, who finished with 11 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .455, while Madyson Brinson contributed 10. Defensively, had two players reached double figures in digs as Tristynn Kerr had 17 and Haley Pelham had 15. From the front row, Edwards contributed six blocks and Brinson added five rejections.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Bulldogs opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Bowie State never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that had just one lead change before the Bulldogs took over the lead.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Bowie State put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-19 victory in set number two. BSU never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that featured seven ties and five lead changes.
SET 3 | Bowie State saw its chance at a 3-0 sweep end when Virginia State took the third set. The Bulldogs lost the first point and never clawed back into the lead before losing the set 25-13.
SET 4 | BSU then dropped their second straight set 25-14 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Bulldogs dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set.
SET 5 | Bowie State had to play a fifth set to take the match. After they won the first two sets, VSU responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Bulldogs finished off their victory with a 15-13 fifth-set win. The Bulldogs took set five and the game despite trailing by six points at 12-6 before fighting back to secure the victory. BSU grabbed the lead at 13-12 and hung on for the set win.
What’s Next
The Bulldogs will await the official seeding of the 2023 CIAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament bracket from the conference office Friday.
